OLD NEWS
December 9, 2000: Updated website with new logo and screenshots. Planning to release a new version soon. Feel free to get the latest from CVS though, I try to keep it somewhat functional :) New things include: ALSA sequencer support, splash image, more undo/redo support, better right click menus, and spin buttons in sample viewer.
September 16, 2000: Smurf Sound Font Editor v0.49.8 released with the following enhancements: experimental waveform generator, some midi controls on toolbar, sample cut support, improved menu interface, toolbar icons, fixed various problems with the sound font tree, a German translation (thanks to Johannes Drechsel-Burkhard), configurable keyboard key map for piano, more sample related preferences, fixed audiofile sample export bug, other bug fixes and code clean up/reformatting.
August 22, 2000: Looks like libsndfile is up to version 0.0.21 and an RPM package is now distributed. Those who downloaded the audiofile RPM of Smurf may want to get the regular Smurf RPM and the new libsndfile RPM. Audiofile has a tendency to terminate the program thats using it, if things aren't to its liking.
July 23, 2000: Updated web site. Status page now available showing progress of various functions in Smurf, let me know if I missed any, or have an idea for a new one. Updated Manual and Current Status and created a Requirements page as per request.
July 7, 2000: Ooops, looks like the --with-libsndfile=PFX switch to the configure script is broken with v0.49.5. Its actually --with-sndfile=PFX, I will release another version later today.
July 5, 2000: Smurf v0.49.5 released with libsndfile support, raw sample loading, key velocity set/view, sample exporting, root key set/view, international language support (need translators!), find feature, multiple item deletes, limited native ALSA support (OSS emulation works!), sound font information set/view and sample selections (although you can't do anything with them yet :) The i386 rpm now requires libsndfile which can be retrieved from the libsndfile homepage it needs to be compiled and installed. If you would rather not bother and have audiofile installed then download the smurf-audiofile i386 rpm. I hope to update the web site soon, it is getting pretty stale.
April 1, 2000: I posted an Introduction to sound fonts to the web site. You can read it by following the "Intro to sound fonts" link. Should be helpful to anyone who is new to sound fonts and even those who aren't. Feedback is welcome, like any part of this project. Happy April fools day, and no I wasn't joking about any of that :)
March 25, 2000: Smurf v0.49.1 released which fixes a problem with some assignments to OSS reserved variables which were causing compile problems with some users. Configure now generates RPM spec file automatically.
March 24, 2000: Smurf development moved to SourceForge. This will provide the project with helpful developement tools such as CVS, forums, mailing lists, bug tracking, surveys, and other goodies. Web site re-done and will be in a state of flux. Feel free to test out some of the new facilities available, they are accessible from the "Smurf Project HQ" link.
March 21, 2000: Smurf v0.49 released. Improved SoundFont tree, sample viewer for setting loop points, preferences, partial GUS/SoftOSS support, set/view preset generators and many other features/improvements. New screenshots of Smurf posted to site.
February 23, 2000: Its been a while since the last release and quite a lot has been done on the project. A CVS repository is in the works, so in the future users shouldn't have to wait so long. I'm also looking for any persons interested in helping out with this project. Anything from coding to creating icons to making this web page better would be helpful. New version comming soon.
December 6, 1999: Released Smurf v0.46 which fixes the broken external midi implimentation. Most of the SoundFont tree right click menu items are active now (except for "Find" and "Goto" items). See the Status page for some details on new problems and limitations. I haven't thoroughly tested this one, so there could be some fairly obvious problems. I also added a FAQ page which will have information on using some of the more non-intuitive features of Smurf.
November 8, 1999: Released Smurf v0.45 which has several new features including saving of SoundFonts, loading samples, control of instrument generators and control of instrument/preset note ranges. Presets, instruments and samples are loaded into sound device (currently only SB Awe). There are a lot of inactive menu items (most of them appear when right clicking on the sound font tree). You can distinguish these by the fact that they do absolutely nothing :) They are there only to notify you of their future existence.
September 13, 1999: Created Smurf Phorum for discussion on anything related to Smurf, try it out!
September 12, 1999: Hmm.. I still haven't posted the code yet? I've been working full time lately so that has cut down some of the developement time. I've also ran into several hurdles in coding this project, some of them are mentioned in the "Status" section. If any of you out there have experience or willingness to code for this project let me know. Also send me an email and tell me what you think about smurf, I would like some feedback. I updated the screen shots and dropped Smurf 0.40 for your downloading pleasure.
August 14, 1999: Getting ready to post the first release of smurf to this page. The code tree is now using autoconf/automake which I find to be incredibly helpful in managing/building the project. Tested Smurf on an iMac running Linux-PPC 1999 and had to make a few endien related changes to the code, but it now functions just like on the i386. "Modularized" the awe driver to make it relatively easy to write support for other Wavetable drivers such as the GUS and Soft OSS driver (software implemented wavetable driver for your 16 bit OSS supported sound card, cool). Stay tuned for new screenshots and the smurf code!
July 2, 1999: First day of web page. Smurf will load sound fonts, display SoundFont GTK+ tree and instrument generator values but little else.
