Problems and Issues Modified: August 25 2001
Unable to load some common file formats, termination of Smurf when trying to load a sample, or RAW sample loading doesn't work
You are probably using an older version ( < v0.2.0) of audiofile with Smurf. Audiofile is a library that loads sound files. It is recommended that you upgrade to audiofile v0.2.0 or use libsndfile. See the requirements page.
Fix for unexpected popping sounds heard when using filter effect
I located and sent in a patch for this bug in the OSS AWE driver and ALSA driver. This is now fixed in ALSA 0.5.9c, I'm not sure when a new version of the OSS AWE driver will be released. I can provide a patch to anyone who needs it. This problem was related to the current filter cutoff frequency register of the EMU chip being set at the start of a note by the initial cutoff frequency variable. So when the initial filter cutoff frequency was lowered, random pops and clicks would be heard at the beginning of the note. Takashi Iwai (OSS AWE driver author and ALSA developer) said that this might also be an issue with the SB Live! driver. If you are experiencing this problem, you should upgrade your OSS AWE driver or try ALSA.
Each time a Preset/Instrument is clicked it takes some time to load it
You probably don't have sample caching enabled in Smurf. This requires a driver that supports this feature. Either plain OSS with AWE driver v0.4.4 or ALSA v0.9.0beta3.
ALSA 0.5.10b and lower have serious problems with this feature and can cause kernel oopses and Smurf crashes.
Using ALSA 0.5.10b or lower and no sound is heard or experiencing crashes
See the question above. The ALSA driver 0.5.10b and lower has some serious problems with wavetable sample caching support.
